Topic: Payroll Accounting – A Primer for Payroll Professionals

Accounting is often viewed as the feared and most confusing aspect of payroll.  However, effective payroll accounting is crucial for the company’s compliance with financial reporting rules, and it helps ensure that management can safeguard assets and has reliable information needed for budgeting and decision making.  In this session, you will learn how accounting fits into the payroll process.  We will review the accounting environment, GAAP measurement and reporting rules, and review the accounting process, from transaction analysis to creation of the financial statements. We will discuss terminology, journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and audits.  

Our discussion will highlight the following topics:

  • The Accounting Environment, Key Players in the Accounting Process and the accounting regulators
  • What is Accounting
  • Why is Effective Payroll Accounting so Important (and info on payroll frauds)
  • Accounting Terminology & Concepts
  • US GAAP versus IRFS
  • The Steps in the Accounting Process (e.g., analyzing transactions, recording transactions, preparing financial statements, closing the books, and the steps in between)
  • Types of Accounts, Chart of Accounts
  • Review of the Four Basis Financial Statements
  • Impact of payroll on the financials
  • Typical Payroll Related Accounts and recording payroll activity
  • Understanding Accounting Periods
  • Payroll Accruals and Corrections
  • Importance of Reconciliation and Examples

 

Speaker: Emily L. Lindsay, MSA, CPA, CGMA

Professorial Lecturer, American University, Kogod School of Business

Ms. Emily Lindsay teaches undergraduate and graduate-level accounting courses, and MBA courses at American University in Washington, DC. Prior to teaching, Emily worked for over 20 years at Marriott International, Inc. in Bethesda, MD where she was Vice President, Corporate Accounting Services, leading the areas of payroll and related banking, payroll tax, payroll and employee stock plan accounting, and business systems support.  Her responsibilities also included corporate accounts payable and administration of employee travel-related programs. Before joining Marriott, she worked as an auditor at the United States Government Accountability Office. 

Emily serves as a member of APA’s Board of Directors, APA’s National Speakers Bureau (NSB), and APA’s Government Relations Task Force. She is also a member of the IRS Advisory Committee (IRSAC) representing payroll professionals.  In past years, Emily has served as a Vice President on APA’s Board, and has represented APA on the IRS Information Reporting Program Advisory Committee (IRPAC), IRS Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee (ETAAC), and the IRS Commissioner’s Advisory Group (CAG).  In 2004 she was honored as APA’s Payroll Woman of the Year. Emily is currently on the Board of the Girl Scouts Council of the Nation’s Capital, and she has served on the Board of the Greater Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants.  She is very active at American University and serves on the Faculty Senate and the AU Executive Committee.  Emily was awarded the 2019 University Faculty Award for Outstanding Service, the 2018 GWSCPA Outstanding Member in Business & Industry Award, and numerous Kogod School of Business teaching and service awards. She earned her Bachelor of Arts at Dickinson College and a Master of Science in Accounting at American University.  Emily is a Certified Public Accountant and a Chartered Global Management Accountant.
